As the Chair of Trustees at Art History Link-Up (AHLU), I've had the privilege of witnessing the incredible impact this organisation has on students’ lives. It's one thing to believe in the power of education, but it’s another entirely to see that belief materialise in real-world success. Over the last few years, I've watched with immense pride as students who have gone through the AHLU programme have not only excelled academically but have landed spaces at top universities, or selfishly, started in roles at Christie's.
The Quality of AHLU Alumni
The students who come through our programmes are truly exceptional. They aren’t just learning about art history; they are mastering it, and in doing so, they are opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise have previously been closed to them. AHLU's commitment to providing high-quality, accessible education means that our students are not only well-prepared for further academic pursuits but are also equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in the modern world.
From the AHLU Program to Christie’s
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role has been seeing former AHLU students take what they’ve learned and apply it directly in their careers. I can’t help but feel a sense of pride when I walk through the Christie’s offices and see some of our alumni contributing to the business. Their journey—from state schools, through the AHLU programme, and into prestigious positions—is a testament to the power of accessible art education.
Why This Matters
Art history is more than just an academic subject; it’s a way of understanding our world. By equipping students with the tools to decode visual culture and placing it within a historical context, we’re not just preparing them for exams—we’re preparing them for life. The fact that AHLU alumni are making their mark at institutions like Christie’s shows that our mission is working. It’s proof that when given the right support, students from under-represented backgrounds can achieve extraordinary things.
A Source of Pride and Motivation
Seeing these students succeed reaffirms my belief in AHLU’s mission and motivates me to keep pushing for more. Every time an AHLU alumnus steps into a role at a place like Christie’s, it’s a victory for them, for us, and for the broader art community. It’s also a reminder of why we do what we do—to ensure that the world of art history is open and accessible to all, regardless of background.
Join Us in Making a Difference
The success of our students is a shared victory, one that wouldn’t be possible without the support of people who believe in the transformative power of art history. Whether you choose to donate, join our Young Patrons scheme, or sponsor specific initiatives, your support is crucial in helping us continue this important work.
Let’s keep opening doors and creating opportunities. Let’s keep saving art history - one student at a time.
We believe art history should be for everyone, however fewer than 1% of state supported secondary schools offer Art History A Level. As a result, there is a lack of diversity in the arts sector and an increasing skills shortage. We are the only charity offering formal Art History teaching to school-aged students from all backgrounds. Your financial support will ensure that everyone has an opportunity to study art history: together we can transform the future of the arts.
